Beloved Date Hearts

I ate and reviewed the original Beloved Date Fruit Hearts but I never got round to publishing it for some reason. Never mind, there are new flavours out now!

The Beloved Date Hearts are part of the healthy snack push, made predominantly with dates (the first flavour contains a whopping 97.5% dates), are gluten free, low fat, high fibre, no added sugar and 1 of your 5 a day. The difference with these though, is they’re actually really bloody tasty!

Cocoa & Berry

The first flavour is Cocoa & Berry. Snacks don’t get much simpler than this: 97.5% raw dates, 2% cocoa powder and 0.5% freeze dried raspberry powder.

They look a lot like the original date hearts and feel it too, sticky to the touch but firm enough to hold their shape after being smacked out of the plastic packaging!

They had a very slight cocoa scent but as the ingredients suggested, it was nearly exclusively date. The texture is entirely unaffected and is as soft, chewy and slightly gritty as is standard.

The flavour carries along this theme unfortunately. That’s not to say they aren’t tasty – they are and I’ll happily pay the measly 50p they’re asking for – but they taste just like the “normal” ones. There is a very slight hint of cocoa but it’s proper blink and you’ll miss it, as for the berries? I didn’t taste them at all!

Nice but a total waste on money for the extra ingredients on Beloveds part.

Rich Cocoa

The second flavour is Rich Cocoa.

The ingredients are nearly identical, a smidgen more dates at 98% but the same amount of cocoa at just 2%.

They look the same.

They feel the same.

The taste the same.

I don’t really know what else I can say! A minute amount of cocoa in the ingredients translates in flavour and I think these are just a waste of Beloveds money. Why bother adding cocoa when they’re going to taste so similar to the original? I mean I’ll buy them again – I like them – but I wouldn’t go out of my way to find either of these cocoa flavours over the others.
